Timeline and Individuals Involved

The Enfield Case began in August 1977 and lasted until 1979. The events mainly concentrated on a terraced house in Enfield, a suburb of London, where the Hodgson family resided.

The family consisted of single mother Peggy Hodgson and her four children, Margaret (12 years old), Janet (11 years old), Johnny (10 years old), and Billy (7 years old).

The poltergeist activities seemed to particularly focus on the two older sisters, Margaret and Janet.

Poltergeist Activities

The eerie occurrences in the Hodgsons' house began with knocking sounds and moving furniture. Over time, the events escalated, and further phenomena were observed, including:

  • Objects being thrown through the air for no apparent reason
  • Janet seemingly being lifted into the air by invisible forces
  • Voices and noises coming from nowhere, especially the voice of an old man allegedly coming from Janet
  • Writing on the walls and destruction of household furnishings

Investigations and Participants

The Society for Psychical Research (SPR)

The Society for Psychical Research, an organization for the investigation of paranormal phenomena, sent two of its members, Maurice Grosse and Guy Lyon Playfair, to investigate the Enfield Case.

The two researchers spent several months with the Hodgson family, collecting numerous witness statements, photographs, and audio recordings that purportedly documented paranormal activities.

Ed and Lorraine Warren

The well-known paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren also visited the Hodgson's house and investigated the case. Although their stay in Enfield was short, they confirmed the presence of a poltergeist and even spoke of demons.
